SmartWrap: Free Gear Returns Sheets

Handing the returns sheet across the rental house counter

a 3dfilm tool · free forever

The show is over. The real work starts now.

SmartWrap is free wrap-day gear returns for film and TV crews: the third 3DFilm Tool, and the one that covers you when the job ends. Check every case back out line by line, flag what is missing, what got damaged and what production kept, then hand the rental house a returns sheet you both sign: proof of what went back, and what did not. No account, no subscription, works with no signal, and nothing you enter ever leaves your device.

Download is for Mac, Windows and Android only. On iPhone and iPad, use Launch SmartWrap and add it to your home screen. Do not use the Download button.

Launch it in the browser and add it to your home screen, or download the single file and keep it anywhere. Same app either way. Free forever.

What it does

  • Imports the job straight from SmartPrep. Everything you checked in at prep arrives as the returns list: substitutes come back as what actually arrived, gear that arrived damaged carries its prep note as proof, and anything that never showed up is excluded, so nobody bills you for a lens you never had.
  • Check-out that keeps up with a wrap. Tap a line as it goes back in the case: To return, Returned, Missing, Damaged, Kept. Long press for notes, part quantities and swaps. The screen stays awake while you work through the truck.
  • A returns sheet both sides sign. A4 PDF named after the production, with a red FLAGS box for everything that did not go back clean, a "not expected back" section for gear that never arrived at prep, and signature lines for the camera department and the rental house.
  • No SmartPrep? No problem. Import the rental order (paste it, or the CSV or quote PDF), start from a template, or build the list from your own gear library.
  • Returns CSV for the production office spreadsheet, Job JSON full-fidelity backup, auto-backup file support, and an offline copy you can keep on the truck laptop.

How wrap day runs, step by step

1

The app walks you through it: job, returns list, check-out, sheet.

2

Tap each line as it goes back in the case. Flags count themselves.

3

Send the returns sheet: flags boxed in red, signatures for both sides.

"This is what's broken."

The wrap conversation nobody enjoys is the one SmartWrap is built for. The monitor that cracked on day 2 goes back flagged and noted. The filter that arrived chipped goes back carrying its prep-sheet note, so everyone can see it was documented on day one, not on your watch. The rental house signs the same sheet you do. That is how a camera department protects its deposit, its reputation and its next booking.

one job, three free tools

The 3DFilm Tools trifecta covers the whole job. SmartPrep preps it: kit list, check-in, prep checks, cards and batteries. SmartLog runs the shoot day: takes, timecode and camera reports. SmartWrap sends the gear home. Each one hands the job to the next, so you type things once.

All three are free forever, work offline, need no account, and are built with the film community, for the film community.

On the iPad

Install it in ten seconds

iPhone and iPad: add it to your home screen

Open the app in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. It installs with the SmartWrap icon and opens full screen like any app, online or not.

Android: install the app

Open the app in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Add to Home screen (or Install app when offered). Done.

Ignore the Download button on iPhone and iPad

Because iOS has nowhere useful to put it. On iOS a download only lands in the Files app, where there is no reliable way to open it back up as a working app. The Launch SmartWrap link is the right way, and it gives you a proper app icon that works offline.

Does it work with no signal?

Yes. After the first visit the whole app lives on your device. Basement rental houses, loading docks and location vans are exactly where it is meant to work. The downloaded single file works with no internet at all, forever.

Where does my data live?

On your device, and nowhere else. SmartWrap makes no network calls: no analytics, no account, no cloud. Settings has an auto-backup file option and a one-tap dated backup so a copy always lives outside the browser. Full details on the privacy page.

How does the SmartPrep handoff work?

In SmartPrep, on the Sheet tab, tap Hand off to SmartWrap. It writes a small file. In SmartWrap, Sheet tab, tap Import and pick that file: the whole checked-in kit list arrives as the returns list, with the smart parts done for you (substitutes, prep damage, gear that never arrived). SmartWrap also reads SmartPrep's ordinary Job JSON export, so it works with any SmartPrep version.
