SmartWrap: Free Gear Returns Sheets

Open the app in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. It installs with the SmartWrap icon and opens full screen like any app, online or not.

Open the app in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Add to Home screen (or Install app when offered). Done.

Because iOS has nowhere useful to put it. On iOS a download only lands in the Files app, where there is no reliable way to open it back up as a working app. The Launch SmartWrap link is the right way, and it gives you a proper app icon that works offline.

Yes. After the first visit the whole app lives on your device. Basement rental houses, loading docks and location vans are exactly where it is meant to work. The downloaded single file works with no internet at all, forever.

Onto your device, with everything else. A photo you attach to a line is stored in the browser's own database on that phone or tablet, never uploaded and never sent anywhere. It rides inside your backups and inside the SmartPrep handoff, so the pictures move with the job, and it prints on the returns sheet PDF you hand over. Deleting the line deletes its photos with it.

On your device, and nowhere else. There is no account, no cloud and no sync, and nothing you enter is ever transmitted: no analytics, no tracking, no telemetry, and the app never reports launches, opens or usage. The only request it makes is for its two typefaces, which load from Google Fonts on the hosted version and carry nothing about your job. Settings has an auto-backup file option and a one-tap dated backup so a copy always lives outside the browser. Full details on the privacy page.

In SmartPrep, on the Sheet tab, tap Hand off to SmartWrap. It writes a small file. In SmartWrap, Sheet tab, tap Import and pick that file: the whole checked-in kit list arrives as the returns list, with the smart parts done for you (substitutes, prep damage, gear that never arrived). Damage photographed at prep comes across with it. SmartWrap also reads SmartPrep's ordinary Job JSON export, so it works with any SmartPrep version. Gear you returned early is subtracted on the way in, and every line keeps the rental house it came from.

• Photograph the damage. A note says the monitor came back cracked. A photograph settles it. Any line can now carry pictures of what is wrong with it, taken with the camera there and then or picked out of your photo library, and so can each individual lens or accessory inside that line: the 32mm gets its own picture, not the set.
• The file is named after the item. A photo of a scratched rehoused K35 saves as TLS_CANON_K35_REHOUSED_SET_32MM_DAMAGE_1.JPG, so a folder of damage photos still makes sense months later, in an email thread, with no app open. Rename the item and its pictures follow.
• They print on the returns sheet. The PDF gains its own damage photos pages after the signatures: two across, each frame fitted whole and never cropped, captioned with the item, the lens it belongs to, the damage recorded against it and the filename. The pictures are embedded in the PDF itself, so the sheet you email is the whole record.
• Prep-day pictures travel to wrap day. Photograph a chipped filter at prep in SmartPrep and the picture arrives with the handoff, sitting against that item as existing damage. The conversation at the counter stops being one person's word against another's.
• Nothing is uploaded, ever. Photos are held in the browser's own database on your device, never in the cloud and never sent anywhere. They ride inside your backups and your Job JSON export, so a restore brings the evidence back with the job. The returns CSV gained a damage_photos column listing the filenames.
• A returns sheet with no photographs on it prints exactly the same file it printed before, byte for byte. Nothing changes for anyone who never takes one.
• SmartWrap speaks Spanish. Pick your language in Settings and the whole app follows, including the returns sheet PDF itself, printed in Spanish for the people who have to read it. It follows your device the first time you open it, so a phone set to Spanish opens in Spanish with nothing to set up, and you can switch back whenever you like. More languages are on the way. The hard part was the groundwork, and that is done, so the next language is a translation rather than a rebuild. Tell us which one your crew needs and it goes on the list.
• Asked for by Alejo Iglesias, in Spain, who did not need it for himself. He wanted to put these tools in front of his colleagues in their own language. That is exactly how this gets built.
• Search the list. A search box on the returns list and the check-out: type anything the row shows, a name, a serial, a rental house, and only the matching lines stay. A Still to return chip shows just what is still out, which at the counter is the only list that matters.
• Both sides sign on the phone. The returns sheet has always printed two signature lines, because both sides signing what went back is the reason it exists. Now camera department and rental house can sign right on the Sheet tab, and the ink prints on the sheet and in the PDF with the name and date beneath.
• The same serial on two lines gets flagged. Quietly, on the row, because one of them is wrong and which one is a judgement for a human.
• It reads Spanish invoices now. Import the factura or albarán from a Spanish rental house and the returns list builds itself: CANTIDAD, DESCRIPCIÓN and IMPORTE columns, amounts written 1.234,56 €, secciones like ÓPTICAS and BATERÍAS, and a Portes delivery line stays off the list. Proven against a real Madrid rental house factura, now part of the permanent test suite shared with SmartPrep.

• It reads a real invoice now, not just a list. A rental house invoice is a table, and SmartWrap reads it as one: the quantity column is the quantity, the serial column is the serial, and a description that wraps over two or three lines is put back together instead of being torn into separate items. Row numbers down the left are no longer mistaken for quantities, which used to turn line 8 into eight batteries.
• Quote PDFs that would not open before, open now. Plenty of rental houses send a PDF written by InDesign, Word or their billing system, and SmartWrap could not read a single line of those: it saw an empty page and told you it looked like a scan. It reads them properly now, so the PDF in your inbox is a returns list in one step.
• The letterhead is read too, and stays out of your way. The rental house, the invoice number, the hire dates, and behind a single line you can open or ignore: the address, phone, email, tax number, contact, terms and PO. It is stored on the job and printed on the returns sheet behind a fold, so it is there the day somebody queries the paperwork and invisible every other day.
• Name your own lenses. Glass now works the way the camera body does: a picker to browse, a free-text name beside it, and the list behind the typing. Start typing a lens house and it offers the lens houses, Cooke to Kowa to Lomo to TLS; start typing a set and it offers the sets. Type something nobody has a name for and it keeps exactly what you typed, because rental sets get rehoused, split and mixed and the catalogue is a starting point, not the truth. Save the kit in the box under any name and it sits at the top of the glass picker on every job after that, and rides along in your backups. The kit box takes lens names as well as focal lengths, so a Lomo Round Front stays a Lomo Round Front instead of having "mm" glued on the end of it.
• Lens sets come in as the lenses you actually hired. An order reading "Zeiss Supreme Prime Set, 21/25/29/35/50/85/100/135mm" now becomes those eight lenses, not the fourteen the manufacturer happens to make. A zoom stays one lens, and a single rehoused prime is no longer expanded into an entire vintage set.
• The suggestion lists got out of their own way. They were capped at six, so typing a maker hid most of that maker's bodies, and long names sorted last and fell off the end. The camera list is fuller and in alphabetical order now, and picking a body fills its format and codec.

• The gear database now carries the second unit. Phantom, Freefly, GoPro, DJI and Insta360 bodies join the cinema cameras, 166 in all, so the high speed body, the drone and the action cameras go on the returns list by name.
• Reading a rental order also got stricter: a line like 3x XLR cable can no longer be mistaken for a camera, which looser matching would have allowed once drones were on the list.
• The same list drives SmartPrep and SmartLog, so a body is named identically on the prep sheet, the camera report and the returns sheet.

• Every lens and accessory tracked on its own. The contents of a line carry over from SmartPrep, each lens in a set and each piece of AKS in a kit with its own serial number and its own damage history, and you tick each one off as it comes back in the case.
• A scratch and damage record that holds up. Every item keeps the damage that was already there when the gear left prep apart from any new damage found on the way back, so the mark that was on the lens on day one does not become your problem at wrap. New damage is boxed in the red flags on the returns sheet.
• AKS ticked back in. The Noga arm and the SDIs that went out with a monitor kit, the spare motors in a focus kit: each one is listed and ticked off as it returns. Anything not ticked back in, or anything damaged, is flagged so it cannot be missed at the counter.
• Custom fields on any line carry through too, and everything, contents, serials and damage, exports to the returns CSV.
• Asked for by Jarod Kemp, a camera assistant in London, who wanted each lens in a set to carry its own serial and damage history and the AKS inside a kit ticked off on return.

• Every line knows which rental house it goes back to. A job can carry as many houses as it took to put the kit together, and both the returns list and the check-out can be grouped by house, so each van gets loaded with the right boxes. The returns sheet gains a Back to column and a house by house block: lines, expected, back, still out and flags for every one of them.
• Gear you sent back mid-shoot is already off the list. Return something early in SmartPrep and the handoff subtracts it. A line you returned in full drops off the returns list and appears under "not expected back" with the date it went; a partly returned line arrives at the right quantity, with a note saying how many went back and when. Nobody searches the truck for a monitor cage that has been home for a week.
• The returns CSV gained a rented_from column, so the production office spreadsheet can sort by house as well.
• Asked for by Jeanna Ross, director and editor at Miss-N-Scene Productions, who was marrying three companies' gear on one job and had already sent part of it back. Requests like that are how these apps get built.
